The Mandalorian and Grogutakes place in "a galaxy far, far away" — but the movie's release date is getting closer and closer!
Officially announced in January 2024, the latestStar Warsmovie picks up after season 3 ofThe Mandaloriantelevision series, which followed the titular character — played byPedro Pascal— as he ventures through theStar Warsgalaxy with his companion, Grogu, otherwise known as Baby Yoda.
Jon Favreau, who created the television show, co-wrote the film withDave Filoniand directed the movie.
"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world thatGeorge Lucascreated,” Favreau said in a statement. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
While many of the details about the film have been kept quiet, Pascal,Sigourney Weaver,Jeremy Allen Whiteand Jonny Coyne are all confirmed members of the cast.
Meanwhile, Disney and Lucasfilmdropped the official trailerin September 2025. PerThe Hollywood Reporter, an ad for the movie debuted during Super Bowl LX, followed byanother trailer, released in February 2026.

While an official plot synopsis has not been released forThe Mandalorian and Grogu, it will most likely pick up where season 3 ofThe Mandalorianshow left off.
The series starred Pascal as the Mandalorian, whose real name is Din Djarin, as he and Grogu escape Imperial forces while trying to reunite the tiny creature with his own kind.
Disney and Lucasfilm released a trailer forThe Mandalorian and Groguin September 2025, featuring all of the beloved characters, as well as new additions. Prior to the trailer, Favreau and Filoni released limited footage at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2024.
The clip featured a planet that resembled Hoth from the 1980 filmTheEmpire Strikes Back,and the Razor Crest from the TV show, according toDeadline. The video also showed Babu Frick, fromStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,returning alongside the red alien Zeb from the TV seriesStar Wars: Rebels.
Who is inTheMandalorian and Grogucast?
The Mandalorian and Grogucast members have slowly been rolled out. Weaver, who is known for her roles in othersci-fi shows and movies, will star as Ward, the leader of the New Republic's Adelphi Rangers.
In September 2025, Weaver confirmed toColliderthat Pascal would be leading alongside her and reprising his role as the Mandalorian. The actor also spoke about working with Weaver and his excitement for the upcoming film in an April 2025 interview withExtra.

"She [Weaver] is an icon," he told the outlet. "She’s one of the biggest movie stars of my lifetime. She’s a perfect example of an actor that has stepped into every kind of genre."
Meanwhile, he teased thatThe Mandalorian and Groguis "one of the greatest adventure movies in the canon of all of cinema."
In addition to Pascal's returning role and Weaver's new character,Whitealso joined as Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt, who was first introduced in the animated movieThe Clone Wars.The final confirmed cast member is Coyne, who will be playing Imperial Warlord, the leader of a remaining faction of the Galactic Empire. Coyne previously played the role in season 3 ofThe Mandalorian.
Who is directingTheMandalorian and Grogu?
Favreauis directingThe Mandalorian and Grogu. He also co-wrote the film with Filoni and is producing it, too. Favreau previously explained that spinning off his show into a movie was both an exciting and challenging experience.
"We really tried to deliver cinema quality effects and storytelling even on the small screen ... but now since we're an IMAX release all the sudden your aspect ratio changes and also making sure that the visual effects have the depth and complexity to hold up to big screen viewing. As a filmmaker it's a wonderful opportunity to open the world up in many ways," he toldExtrain April 2025.
Favreau further toldColliderthat they tried to "embrace" all the changes that come with translating television to a movie.
"We found that a lot of stuff in space looked great in IMAX, and a lot of stuff looked great in sets that we built taller," he said in April 2025. "We really embraced the opportunity. And again, remember, since we're coming from television to the big screen, we really wanted to find what opportunities we didn't have available to us in the other format."
Is there a trailer forTheMandalorian and Grogu?
Disney and Lucasfilm shared the firsttrailerfor the movie on Sept. 22. The clip featured the Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as Weaver, White and Coyne's characters as they venture through the galaxy, take on enemies and encounter various monsters.
"The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy," reads an official synopsis for the movie. "As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu."
In February 2026, another trailer was released, featuring Din Djarin on the hunt for a Hutt, and tracking down other bad guys.
When isTheMandalorian and Grogucoming out?
The Mandalorian and Groguwill premiere in theaters on May 22, 2026. Although filming was completed in late 2024, the creators have been in the process of editing and designing visual effects.
"You discover so much as you edit a film and put it together with visual effects. Right now, we're really locked in on the big screen story that's coming," Favreau told Collider in April 2025.
